Plan to turn derelict pub in Norwich into eco-hostel

A derelict pub in Norwich has been bought by a Norfolk family who plan to turn it into an “eco-friendly” hostel.

The Ferry Boat Inn, next to the River Wensum on King Street, was a live music venue but has not been occupied for three years.

The Borthwick family has bought the property to model on its current backpacker hostel, Deepdale Farm, on the north Norfolk coast.

The hostel, which would be the only one in Norwich, should open next year.

The Borthwicks plan to offer accommodation along with canoeing, cycling and a cafe.

The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) had lobbied previous owners Greene King to reopen the pub.

Alister Borthwick, one of the new owners, said he “definitely felt” that a small real ale pub on the site would be an excellent addition.

Norwich’s last Youth Hostel Association building closed seven years ago.
